Effective May 7, 2025, Kentucky driver's licenses, permits, and identification cards without a black star will no longer be accepted for certain purposes.
What is REAL ID?
REAL ID is a compliant identification card that meets federal security standards set by the Department of Homeland Security. Kentucky's REAL ID cards feature a black star cutout in the upper-right corner.
How to Apply for a REAL ID
U.S. citizens or permanent residents can apply for a REAL ID at any Kentucky Driver Licensing Regional Office. You will need to provide proof of: * Identity (e.g., passport, birth certificate) * Social Security number * Residency (e.g., utility bill, rental agreement)
Why You Need a REAL ID
Beginning May 7, 2025, Kentuckians must have a REAL ID or other federally accepted identification to: * Board commercial flights within the United States * Access military bases and federal facilities that require identification * Enter certain government buildings
